Ray grew up in a small rural town of Aurelia in northwest Iowa. His first jobs were on the farms around his home town.
His father died when he was 13. His mother, a high school English teacher, raised her two sons, Rufus and Ray.

Ray attended the University of Northern Iowa where he met his wife, Jean. They were married in the summer of 1967 in the Cedar Falls UCC church located only a few blocks from the campus. In January 1968, he graduated from UNI with a BA degree in Elementary Education.

Over the next 10 years, he taught upper elementary grades in Humboldt and Davenport Iowa.  His teaching experience included teaching fourth grade in a Davenport inner city school. Ray left teaching in 1978 to pursue a career as a computer programmer.

Ray and his family moved to Peoria, IL. There he spent the next 7 years installing, training, supporting staffs of schools, counties and cities on the use of UNISYS accounting software. During this time, he worked closely with several school superintendent and city administrator learning about fund accounting. He also wrote numerous COBOL programs for UNISYS customers.

With the downsizing of UNISYS, he started his own company. For the next three years, he support about 10 customers while they transitioned to different software.

For the next few years, he worked for several small software companies writing a number of computer programs.

In 1995, he entered Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. A year later, he received a BA in computer science.
After graduation, he joined a small software company in Minnetonka.
At that time he moved to Eden Prairie.
Now semi-retired, he works as a test score reader and a reserve teacher.
Ray and Jean have two grown sons, Neil and Dan. Both sons live in Eden Prairie.
